Home automation developments in 2026
2025 was once again packed with unique home automation projects. And there are exciting, smart developments in home automation coming in 2026! From our VEB certification and collaboration with Slimmer Wonen to our contribution to the EU project INBLANC and the development of an Energy Management System, read what our home automation developments can do for you.
Most unique home automation project in 2025
The most unique thing we’ve worked on this year is the EU project INBLANC. This project involves very different aspects than most of our projects for the consumer and business sectors. We’re collaborating on the development of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) tool and methodology for establishing an open data ecosystem for the design, management, renovation, and sustainability of buildings. This is a much more theoretical approach than our usual hands-on, practical one.
The fact that the other consortium members come from other countries also makes it particularly challenging. Six projects are currently underway across the EU, ranging from smart heritage renovation to making entire neighborhoods smarter. Work is also underway to phase out the least energy-efficient buildings, decarbonize academic hospital buildings, and make public buildings greener and more sustainable.
Huge development Comfortica
Comfortica has undergone significant development in the past year. In addition to the ongoing EU project, in early 2025 we partnered with Slimmer Wonen (Smarter Living), a company specializing in operating systems for window decoration and flooring. This partnership allows us to offer our customers faster service and a wider range of home automation products and services.
We’ve also become an officially VEB-certified security company since last year. We’ve been receiving increasing inquiries from both private and business clients about whether we offer certified security systems, usually because this is a requirement of their insurers. With the VEB quality mark, we can offer a broader portfolio of security systems to both private and business clients.
Important home automation developments in 2025
The most important development in home automation last year was Homey’s launch of a Home Assistant competitor. You can run the Homey software on your own hardware and/or virtually. This is therefore our favorite gadget for the coming year. At Comfortica, we’re also big fans of Home Assistant. It’s a plug-and-play, energy-efficient smart home hub that allows all your smart devices from different brands—regardless of the standard—to work together. A bonus of the latter is that your data is stored locally and privately, so it’s not dependent on the cloud. The integration with the FIBARO/Nice Home Center 3 is also excellent!
Home automation in 2026
We’re currently busy developing an Energy Management System (EMS) based on Home Assistant (and are also exploring Fibaro Nice/Homey). We’re increasingly being asked how we can manage energy demand as efficiently as possible by controlling the charging station, battery, and converter. This is also to ensure minimal energy is fed into the grid. This will become particularly relevant starting in 2027, when the netting agreement will be phased out.
We’re very much looking forward to getting started on exciting new projects in 2026, including the second EU project we’ve now secured. It’s a promising prospect that we look forward to with enthusiasm and pride.
